How long does it take to get an ITIN?

Non-resident aliens, dependents/spouses of U.S. citizens or residents, and individuals engaged in business or investment activities are among those who can apply. An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the United States. It is used for individuals who are required to have a taxpayer identification number for tax purposes but are not eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN). The IRS requires anyone who prepares or assists in preparing federal tax returns for compensation to have a PTIN.

Who doesn’t need an ITIN

You will only file a tax return to the address above once, when you file Form W-7 to get an ITIN. In subsequent years, when you have an ITIN, you will file your tax return as directed in the form instructions.
